History of Atascocita

Atascocita is an unincorporated community located in Harris County, Texas, near Houston. Here’s an overview of the history of Atascocita:

Early History: The area where Atascocita is situated was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Atakapa and Akokisa. European settlers began to arrive in the region in the 19th century, attracted by the fertile land and natural resources.

Development and Naming: The development of Atascocita began in the 1970s when Humble Oil and Refining Company (now ExxonMobil) purchased large tracts of land for oil and gas exploration. The company later sold the land to a subsidiary of the Friendswood Development Company, which began residential development in the area. Atascocita was named after the Atascocita Road, which runs through the community and translates to “obstruction of water” in Spanish, referring to the nearby Lake Houston and the area’s water features.

Growth and Residential Expansion: Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Atascocita experienced rapid growth as more people moved to the area seeking suburban living near Houston. The development of master-planned communities, such as Atascocita Shores, Atascocita Trails, and Walden on Lake Houston, contributed to the community’s expansion. These communities offered a range of housing options, amenities, and recreational facilities, attracting families and professionals to the area.

Infrastructure and Amenities: To support the growing population, infrastructure development followed in Atascocita. Schools, parks, shopping centers, and other amenities were established to serve the community. Atascocita is known for its numerous golf courses, including The Golf Club of Houston, which hosts the Houston Open, a PGA Tour event.

Community Spirit and Civic Engagement: Atascocita has a strong sense of community and active civic engagement. Residents participate in local organizations, homeowners’ associations, and community events. The Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department, formed in 1976, provides fire protection and emergency services to the area.

Continued Growth and Diversification: In recent years, Atascocita has continued to grow and diversify. New residential and commercial developments have emerged, offering a range of housing options and amenities. The community has seen the expansion of retail centers, restaurants, and healthcare facilities to meet the needs of its growing population.

Atascocita today is a thriving suburban community known for its family-friendly atmosphere, recreational opportunities, and convenient access to Houston. The area’s growth, development, and commitment to community involvement have shaped Atascocita into a desirable place to live, work, and raise a family.
